How to remove Windows 10 Technical Preview watermark

Microsoft adds a watermark to the bottom right of the screen reminding users that they are using a preview version of the software. If you are one of the many users that are annoyed by this constant reminder, this article is for you.
Over the years Microsoft have employed a number of different methods to print the mark. In the past I have seen hackers replace the cached copy of the wallpaper for an unmarked version. From my testing this doesn’t seem to be possible with the Windows 10 Technical Preview.

I have tested this tutorial on both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows 10 Technical Preview. So before starting you will need:

Since a lot of you have been facing problems of removing Windows 10 Technical Preview Watermark i want to make it easy for you....So if you don't want to do it manually Follow the steps in Method 1.

I used method one and I'm 100% certain I did everything correctly however my start menu has broken as well, clicking on the button does nothing. Could it be because I'm using the en-GB build?

Reply

At the moment my install is broken, I tried switching to the full screen start menu to see if that would work but now I'm stuck in a loop between a black screen and the desktop switching every few seconds. you wouldn't happen to have the original en-GB files would you?

Reply

Sorry i dont have .......now you have to put back the original basebrd.dll.mui and shell32.dll.muithen your OS will be okey.
Use safe mode

Worked perfect for me. Had to restart a couple of times, though, kept getting the "file in use error" with the shell32....file. But things turned out great. No more watermarks. Thanks.

Mohamed Shedeed mod

how did you fix this issue i kept restarting same problem with shell32 ?

Reply

Did #1 and it works, but 1 important step is missing from the guide.

Before you copy over the included files you have to first take ownership of the files you're going to overwrite - if you don't you'll get a permission error.

Other than that great stuff!

Worked like a charm...thanks!

For those who just can't replace the files because they are blocked or in use by some software or service: Use this free software - http://lockhunter.com/ - It will check what is causing the trouble, so you'll be able to unlock and rename the file, then you can just paste the edited file downloaded from this post.

I couldn't replace, rename or delete shell32.dll.mui, even after "Taking Ownership". After using this software which I found on Google, I was able to do it by unlocking and renaming with the rename option inside the software to shell32.dll.mui.old.

basebrd.dll.mui I could replace without any problems.

Don't forget to open Command Prompt, typing Mcbuilder and then restart.

Followed Method 1 - worked out fine on client and server. Thanks

Hey guys i just modded the en-GB shell32.dll.mui and basebrd.dll.mui files for the British version of the technical preview. Not sure if there is any different with those files but they are in different locations and the string values don't match.

There was a new update this morning and with it the words Evaluation Copy Build 9860 are left behind after this process. Will there be an update?

Today's update leaves some verbiage behind after this method is used.
